Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton believes the 2020-21 Formula 1 season will be the tightest ever as he has seen the competition grow stronger each year.
Lewis Hamilton got behind the wheel of his 2020 Mercedes on Friday – and the six-time champ said the new car felt “great” after he completed a shakedown at Silverstone.
Silverstone hosted Mercedes on Valentine’s Day as their W11 – the car that could add to their tally of 12 championships since 2014 – was unleashed on track for the first time ahead of the 2020 F1 season. The W11 could prove to be a significant car in the history of F1, with the chance of giving Mercedes a record-extending seventh double world championship – and giving Hamilton himself his own seventh drivers’ title, which would see him equal the tally of the great Michael Schumacher.
Hamilton has been away for pre-season training with his father Anthony, using the winter to get some downtime before embarking on another challenging campaign which could end up with him equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles.
Lewis Hamilton says he and Mercedes are as motivated as ever this year to continue their success.”It is my eighth year with the team and the buzz is the same every year,” said six-time world champion Hamilton.
“They couldn’t be more excited or driven. That is the most impressive thing.”
After taking over from Bottas in the new W11 in the afternoon, Hamilton said it “felt great”.
“I’ve been doing this a long time but each time you get in, the excitement is exactly the same if not more,” he added.
“It all ran smoothly and we won’t really know until we get to testing just how good a machine it is in terms of how big an improvement it is, but it didn’t feel like a big departure from where we were in (the last race in) Abu Dhabi so that’s a good start.”
Hamilton said there were no signs of the complacency of over-confidence from the team as they embarked on what could be their seventh consecutive championship-winning year.
“The car felt great. There’s so much work that goes into building this car, so you’re only one of two that get to drive it, so you’re really trying to pay attention to the surroundings, the seating position, the feeling you’re getting back from the steering column and the balance.

The news that the car felt good and ran well is ominous news for Mercedes’ rivals, who have had to watch the Silver Arrows scoop up both world championships for the last six seasons in a row.
Talking about Lewis Hamilton’s future, it has been the subject of much speculation over the last few months, with the six-time world champion’s Mercedes deal expiring at the end of this year. But his boss Toto Wolff says he expects talks on a new contract to kick off in the coming weeks.
