Indian boxer Nutlai Lalbiakkima created history in President’s Cup after defeating world number 1 and Rio Olypic Gold medalist Hasanboy Dusmatov on Thursday in an international event going on in Kazakhstan.

With a 4-1 victory over Olympic Champion, the 22-year old Mizoram boxer has assured himself of a medal in the 49kg category by reaching the semi-finals stage of the President’s Cup 2018.

Lalbiakkima, who hails from Saiha, a small village close to Aizawl in Mizoram becomes the first Indian boxer to beat an reigning Olympic gold medalist, that too on his first tournament for the country. What an incredible debut he is having!

Lalbiakkima stated after the match that he was quite nervous for the match with his opponent being the number one in the world and the best boxer in the world but watching (Dusmatov) videos did the trick for the Indian and it was a special win for him.

In his quarterfinals match, he knocked down Thailand’s Thaani in just 20 seconds to move to the next round.

Boxing Federation of India (BFI) treasurer Hemanta Kalita said that Lalbiakkima has made the whole nation proud and the federation will take care of everything to prepare Lalbiakkima for the 2020 Olympics.

India and Uzbekistan have recently entered a pact for an exchange programme in boxing which will start next month.

Here’s the video of Lalbiakkima beating Olympic Champion:

Lalbiakkima life has been full of challenges with an ailing father and mother who sells fish in the local market to run the house. He was exposed to boxing in 2009 when local cable network LPS vision and Mizoram Boxing Association organised Pro Fight. He won the tournament four consecutive times since 2014.
