Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal will once again be training under Gopichand, three years after the two had parted ways.

Saina made the announcement via a series of tweets where she clarified that she had ended her association with now former coach Vimal kumar and that national coach Gopichand had agreed to help her again.

Nehwal had previously trained under Gopichand before terminating their partnership three years ago and since then, she had been mentored by Kumar. The former World No. 1 had recently won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Glasgow, losing out to eventual winner Nozomi Okuhara in a hard-fought semifinal.

Saina, who started talking to Gopi during the World Championships in Glasgow a week back, began training at his academy recently. She had left Gopichand’s academy and started training under Vimal in Bangalore from September 2, 2014.

Saina, who started talking to Gopi during the World Championships in Glasgow a week back, began training at his academy recently. She had left Gopichand’s academy and started training under Vimal in Bangalore from September 2, 2014.

Under Kumar, she won two World Championships medals and topped the women’s rankings. She also won a silver medal at the 2015 Worlds as well as her bronze in the Glasgow Championships and along with that, she even reached the final of the All England Championships apart from multiple Super Series crowns.

During the last three years, Saina had maintained a distance from Gopichand. Though they were not on talking terms, it’s a fact that they have a lot of affection and respect for each other. It is under Gopichand that Saina had won a number of international titles and became the first Indian shuttler to win a medal (bronze) at the Olympics.

The duo were responsible for popularising the game. Incidentally, it is not the first time that Saina had left Gopichand. A few months after she won the Commonwealth Games gold in 2010, Saina preferred to train under Bhaskar Babu. But a few days later she returned to train with Gopichand.

Saina will also be training intensely at Gopichand’s academy in Hyderabad. She will also be training under SAI appointed Malaysian coach Mr. Mulyo Handoyo as well, who has played a huge role in the recent surge in Indian badminton since his arrival.

Pullela Gopichand and Saina Nehwal are two of the most well-known names in the badminton circuit in India. Despite their history, the two have reconciled with each other. Now that these two big names are reuniting once again, one can expect Nehwal’s game to drastically improve and her experience to rub off on Gopichand’s other proteges. So in other words, it’s a win-win situation.
