Sailing Olympic Qualifier : Varun / Ganapathy had excellent day 3, Nethra Kumanan continue to lead

Asian game Bronze medalist Ganapathy ganapathy and Varun Thakkar had a brilliant outing on day 3 of 2021 Mussanah Open Championship. While Indian Sailing Queen Nethra Kumanan continue to lead Laser Radial event.

The Asia and Africa Olympic Qualifier for Tokyo 2020 is going on at an intense pace in Mussanah, Oman with all competitors getting the full schedule of racing in light wind conditions. Attake here at Mussanah, Oman are 1 place each for the 49er, 49erFX, RSX Men, RSX Women and two spots each for Laser Standard and Laser Radial.

Nethra  Kumanan won both the races today and take a good lead over other Indian Ramya Saravanan. At 2nd place currently is salior from Nederlands who is not compitition for Olympic quota. Chennai based Sailor Kumanan is currently on 7 points ahead of Dutch who has 12 points.

Laser Radial standing after 6 races

Other Indian in event Ramya finished with 3rd and 5th place today. Here 2 quota are available in this event but for India only one can qualify, so Ramya needs to finish ahead of Nethra if she wanted to qualify for Olympics. Hongkong is currently at second quota place position and is one point behind Ramya with 21 points.

Star of the day for India was Varun Ashok Thakkar and KC Ganapathy who finished 3rd , 1st and 2nd in race 7, 8 and 9 respectively. They are currently at 26 points in 49er Class, and are 10 points ahead of  3rd place China who is second best among Asian team . 2nd place South Africa who has 35 points is competing for African quota. With 6 more races left Indian pair has make decent lead  on the top of table.Here one place is available for Asian countries and one for African.

Other Indian in the event are way behind in term of Olympic quota, Many and Prince are on 9th place while 3rd Indian pair Munna and Sandip lag behind on 12th position . If Ganapathy / Varun and Nethra manages to qualify it will be first time in Olympic history India will have 2 quota in Sailing.

Other Indian who are still in contention for Olympic quota is Vishanu Saravanan who is currently 3rd in Radial event. Vishanu has 22 points and is 3 point behind 2nd place Thailand . Singapore is currently leading the race with 12 points . With 2 quota available in Radial, it will be exciting battle in upcoming races for Tokyo Olympic ticket.

In 49er, Ekta and Ritika is currently 4th with 27 points while Hong Kong lead with 15 points.

Format of races and point system

Total 15 races will be there in 49er, 49erFX,12 races in RSX Men, RSX Women while Laser Standard and Laser Radial will have 10 races. After 15/12/10 races top 10 will move to medal races which has double point. Among all 15 races best 14 ( similarly among 12 best 11 and among 10 best 9) races will be considered along with Medal races for points and sailer with lowest point will won the overall race.

Points will be awarded on the basis of rank in race like if one sailor finishes 1st he will get 1 point , 2 for 2nd place finish similarly 10 for 10th place finish. And after all the races sailer with lowest points will win the event .

If a athlete Disqualify then he will get one more point then total player in that event .like if there are 12 sailer and a Sailer disqualify then he will get 13 points in that race.
