It was a disappointing day for India today at Thailand Open 2019 with only 3 wins and 5 losses.
India’s day started with a good news when Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Sheety defeated world no 7 Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto to enter the quarter-finals.
But later both India’s top players Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth lost their respective matches. Both started good winning the first set but could not maintain the momentum and eventually lost their matches. Saina Nehwal lost to Sayaka Takahashi of Japan 21-16,11-21,14-21. Kindambi Srikanth lost to Khosit Phetpradab of Thailand 21-11,16-21,12-21. It was very disappointing as both players lost to lower ranked opponents.
In mixed doubles,we still has some hopes from Satwik and Ashwini. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Ashwini Ponnappa beat Alfian Eko Prasetya/ Marsheilla Gischa Islami of Indonesia 21-18,21-19 to reach the quarter-finals.
Sai Praneeth also enters quarter-finals beating his counterpart from India Subhankar Dey 21-18, 21-19.
In other matches, P Kashyap lost to third-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Taipei 9-21,14-21 in just 33 minutes. Pranav Jerry Chopra/ Sikki Reddy lost to eighth-seeded Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet of Hongkong 16-21,11-21 in mixed doubles. Prannoy HS lost to sixth-seeded Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 17-21,10-21 in men’s single.
On Friday, Sai Praneeth will face seventh-seeded Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan in men’s singles quarter-final. In men’s doubles quarter-final, Satwik/Chirag will face Choi Solgyu/Seo Seung Jae of Korea. Satwik/Ashwini will face third-seeded Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashio of Japan in mixed doubles.
