Sumit in Super Heavy-weight category, fails to win India's second Gold in Asian Wrestling Championship as he went down fighting to Iran's Yadollah Mohebi by 2-6.
Sumit couldn't capitalise his lead of 2-1 into victory as Iran's wrestler bounced back strongly to take 4 points at a crucial stage & snatch the victory. Indian grappler tried some desperate moves in the last minute to win some points but Iranian denied him with a strong defence.
With this silver, India concluded the Asian Wrestling Championship 2017 with 10 medals including 1 Gold, 5 Silver & 4 Bronze bettering the numbers of previous Asian meet where India bagged 9 medals (1 Gold, 3 Silver & 5 Bronze).
Bajrang Punia (65 kg) brings the only Gold for the nation & he will be one of the best bet of India for the World Wrestling Championship.
Coming after almost a year, Sakshi Malik showed some creditable performance while Vinesh Phogat who got injured in Rio Olympics made a promising comeback in this championship. She look confident & eager to perform at big events & win medals.
India finished on 5th position in overall medal tally while Japan took the first position with 16 medals (8G, 3S, 5B) followed by Iran with 15 medals (7G, 2S, 6B) & kazakhstan with 13 medals (2G, 5S, 6B).
Indian wrestlers will now try their luck at World Wrestling Championship to be held in Paris, France from August, 2017.
