3. Manchester City
- Money spent: £221.5m
- Money received: £90.6m
- Net Spend: £130.9m
Pep Guardiola had to clear lots of things from his squad that finished third last season and he did exactly that. The defence saw a major haul with the Catalan manager spending in excess off £220m in all this summer.
They raided AS Monaco for Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva while right-backs Kyle Walker and Danilo were signed from Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.
Plus, there is lot to be choose from attack. Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus will fight for starting spots while Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva fight for two spots in midfield.
Meanwhile Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling will battle for a winger’s role.
Guardiola has maintained his trust in Fernandinho even after his sloppy performances last season (remember the three red cards?). Ilkay Gundogan is always on the treatment table while Yaya Toure is on his last legs.
However, not having Sanchez will remain a setback for Manchester City as they did all what they could to have him & thought the deal is done & Arsenal eventually stayed true to their word by not releasing him because they couldn’t line up a replacement in time.
4. Manchester United
- Money spent: £145.8m
- Money received: £18.8m
- Net Spend: £127m
United will go as winners from transfer window for sure and their perfect start to the season only proves how shrewd Jose Mourinho has been as he starts his usually iconic second season at a club.
Man U identified their targets earlier and set about getting them on board for pre-season. Victor Lindelof was brought in as early as June while the Red Devils also hijacked Chelsea’s deal for Romelu Lukaku and signed him for £75m.
Mourinho complained that he is not getting his targets & attempts at blaming executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for not dealing with the respective clubs, his biggest coup came in the form of Nemanja Matic who left defending champions Chelsea to plug the hole in United’s midfield.
Matic arrival has proved more explosives in Man U attack and he has formed a lethal partnership with Lukaku. Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have also stepped up their game. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic also rejoining the side, United are well set for a title challenge.
