Indian Football Team lost their first game of the Intercontinental Cup 2018 against New Zealand by 1-2 at the Mumbai Football Arena on Thursday.

Sunil Chhetri, who was playing his 101th International match drew the first blood for the India as NZ goalkeeper’s clearance went straight at Chhetri’s feet, who didn’t missed out the chance and scored the first goal of the evening.

With this goal, Indian captain made a new milestone by scoring in his 7th consecutive home game that he has been a part of. Also, this was Cheetri’s 62nd international goal, and is now only behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who are on 81 and 64 goals, respectively on the list of highest active international goalscorers in football.

However, India’s lead didn’t last long as New Zealand counter-attacked strongly and De Jong with a neat little finish scored the equalizer.

The Black Caps continued to build up pressure on the Indian defence and apparently with five minutes left in the game, scored a goal to take a well deserve lead over the Blue Tigers by 2-1.

Jeje Lalpekhlua, who was playing his 50th international match had a great chance of equalizing the things for India as NZ messed up a clearance but the shot delivered was shot and wide.

With this defeat, India’s chances of making the final of Intercontinental Cup 2018 has taken a hit. Should Kenya win big again Taipei on Friday (every chance they could), India could end up missing out on a place in the final. (But it will have to be really big win for Kenya for India to miss out). Final will held on 10th June 2018 at the Mumbai Football Arena.
