Vinesh Phogat creates History by becoming the first Indian woman to win Wrestling gold at the Asian Games, she beats Japan’s Yuki Irie in 50kg class final.
After Bajrang Punia’s dominant performance last night, it was Vinesh Phogat’s turn to entertain the crowd.
Participating in the 50 Kg weight category, Phogat blew away her opposition like a deck of cards. First came China’s Sun Yanan, who provided somewhat of a challenge to Phogat. However, the Indian reigned supreme at the end of the bout 8-2.
The Indian grappler then faced South Korea’s Kim Hyungjoo. The bout lasted a little more than a minute, as Phogat beat her opponent 11-0. She then moved on to the semifinal, where she defeated Uzbekistan’s Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova without conceding a point. The fight ended in the Indian’s favour with the scoreline, 10-0.
Phogat’s hard work, or light work in this case, meant that she faced Japan’s Ire Yuki in the final.
Once again, Phogat came flying out the blocks in the final match. The Indian grappler won four unanswered points in the first part of the bout, establishing her dominance. Her opponent, Yuki, tried to mount a comeback in the second part of the bout only to see her attempts thwarted by Phogat.
In the end, Phogat claimed India and Wrestling’s second Gold medal of the Games, becoming the first Indian woman ever to achieve this feat.
