Indian captain Sunil Chhetri scored two goals on his 100th international appearance against Kenya at Intercontinental Cup 2018 to enhance his overall tally to 61 goals to be on the 3rd position on the list of the highest active international goalscorers in football.
Interestingly, the goal that took Chhetri to the 61-goal-mark was absolutely special to watch as the captain did a delicious chip over Kenyan goalkeeper Patrick Musotsi Matasi in added time, to put India in front by 3-0 against the African side.
Blue Tigers are unbeaten in this tournament so far and have fixed their spot in the final after defeating Chinese Taipei by 5-0 and Kenya by 3-0 in the round-robin format tournament. India will next play against New Zealand on 7th June in another sold out fixture of Intercontinental Cup 2018.
Sunil Chhetri, who scored an excellent hat-trick against Chinese Taipei came up with the goods once again, as he put to past the Kenyans to score a brace on his 100th international game.
He made a heartfelt plea on Saturday to all the football fans to go watch India football matches in the stadiums. His plea did the trick as Intercontinental Cup match between India and Kenya at the Mumbai Football Arena on Monday was sold out.
While, Chhetri’s first goal was a penalty kick, that put India ahead, Jeje Lalpekhlua doubled the Indian lead with a scorching finish from close range to put India ahead by 2-0.
In the dying moments of the match, India were on the back-foot with Kenya attacking at them to get a one goal atleast. Midfielder Pranoy Halder managed to get the ball from the Harambee Stars and played it out to Chhetri’s strike partner Balwant Singh on the half-way line.
Balwant managed to pass the ball to his captain and Chhetri had just the keeper to beat, with acres in front of him. It was the manner in which he finished the chance off, that captured everyone’s imagination. With goalkeeper Matasi charging at him, Chhetri decided to chip it over the former to score the 61st international goal of his career.
