World Championship Silver medlist Amit Panghal qualify for Tokyo Olympic as he beat Carlo Paalam of Philippines in a close bout.
Amit who is only Indian men Boxer to top the World ranking Since since Vijender Singh peaked in 2009 with a world championships bronze, won his match against Indonesian opponent by 4-1.Amit Panghal has been ranked World No. 1 in the 52kg weight category by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Boxing Task Force recently.
It was third straight victory for Amit over Carlo Paalam but all bout was closely fought. Amit beat him recently at world championship Quarterfinals in a close bout by 4-1. While earlier in Asian game Amit defeat Carlo in another close bout by 3-2.
Panghal who won gold medals at the Commonwealth and Asian Games in 2018,became the first Indian to win a world championship silver medal in 2019. No Indian men Boxer has won World championship gold so far.
Amit came here after a hard fought bout against Enkhmandekh Kharkhuu of Mongolia, where Amit over class Mongolian by 30-27 29-28 28-29 28-29 and 29-28 while Philippines has competitively easier opening round where he won by 5-0 over Afg boxer.
It was again a tight contest between Amit and Carlo here, as Amit lead first round by 3-2. Both Amit and Carlo deliver hard punches to each other but Amit continue to lead after second round. Amit won second round by 4-1. In final round it was again close contest between both the boxer. It looks clearly that CARLOS connected more punches in the match but Amit make it to Olympic by 4-1 final score by referee.
Amit Panghal became Fourth Indian men Boxer and overall sixth Indian to qualify from this 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament to Olympic.
India now have won 38 quota overalls across 7 sports discipline. Still Manish, Mary Mom and Simranjit is yet to fight. Sachin who lost yesterday also has a chance to fight for quota via single quota boxoff where he have to won 2 matches for Tokyo Olympic quota.
